Writing Portfolio

Throughout my professional writing career I applied a versatile skill set to work in journalism, content writing, marketing, and education. The following writing samples represent my diverse range in writing.

With a Bachelors Degree in English and a Concentration in Professional Writing from Appalachian State University, my degree is complemented by a minor in Communication as well as a focus in Technical Photography and Sustainable Development.

Search Engine Optimization

I work to tailor the Native’s Way Costa Rica webpages to optimize keywords for Google searches, driving visitors to the Guanacaste-based company in an effort to increase engagement.

Using Semrush and Yost SEO, I combined thorough keyword research with engaging, culturally relevant storytelling to boost organic visibility and drive traffic.

From highlighting eco-tourism hotspots to local cuisine, I create compelling, search-optimized content which captures the essence of Costa Rica.

My work spanned blog articles, travel guides and web copy which ensures Native’s Way stands out in a competitive market, attracting the right audience and converting clicks into bookings.

Social Media Writing

I rely heavily upon social media in self-promoting my personal art practice.

Each post is thoughtfully crafted to share the stories behind my work, fostering engagement and building a community of art enthusiasts.

From showcasing the process behind creating mosaics with salvaged materials to promoting exhibitions and sharing insights into my creative journey, my writing strikes a balance between authenticity and professionalism.

By pairing compelling visuals with impactful captions, I create a cohesive online presence which reflects my artistic vision and invites followers to engage more deeply with my work.

Content Writing

In creating websites from scratch, I drafted the bulk of its content

As a small business owner and account manager, I created content for websites spanning art, sailing and industrial supply.

I communicated effectively with clients through marketing and social media platforms to promote services and troubleshoot problems.

Additionally, I acquired a background in website management by resolving communication issues through splunk and by constructing a wordpress website from scratch.

Columnist

Sunshine Sketches was a monthly column I penned for the Sun News featuring local artists.

“Sunshine Sketches presents teachers who offer a fresh perspective” represents the regularly published column I authored, which to bolstered Cleveland’s creative community.

This edition of the column profiled the exemplary high school art teacher Tom Shemrich, as well as spotlighting additional teachers and the programs they offer.

The print version of this story ran with photos that I shot and the online version ran with a slideshow I constructed.

Journalism

While I focused on features as a reporter, I excelled as well in hard news.

Occasionally events in my former coverage area made national news.

I authored a series of articles addressing a murder as well as an ensuing trial and sentencing honed my professionalism and provided a palpable sense of our nation’s legal system.

Public Relations

Drafting a well-constructed press release is crucial to establishing a small business. Successfully drafting media releases yielded a number of articles featuring my former small business Artsy, including this document which yeiled a profile in the nationally circulated Garden Center Magazine.

Artsy features also ran in the digital zine, Wonderfilled, which highlighted Artsy’s Asheville market, Crain’s Business site, which profiled craft beer + yoga events in Cleveland, and hyper local event boards such as the Orlando Date Night Guide and the Cool Cleveland page.

Event Planning

Promotional Materials Created with InDesign

In 2015 I co-curated Contempler, an art show which took place at Galerie Equipe, the Chicago art gallery I managed.

I created promotional materials with Adobe InDesign, which were distributed throughout Chicago. The event opening drew a large crowd, featured live music and hosted out of state artists.
I’ve since applied my attention to detail to coordinating whole calendars of event schedules, including staffing, catering and venue coordinating to tourism companies including Chicago Sailboat Charters and Native’s Way Costa Rica.

Manual Drafting

I applied my practice in clear, accurate communication to internal communication through my work as a studio assistant and operations manager.

The above document represents a process manual describing the nebulous process of sculpture building in clear, step by step language.

I’ve also created manuals as an operations manager for my new hires at Chicago Sailboat Charters as well as across multiple departments in my work in communications with McMaster-Carr.

Profile Writing

As a reporter I was encouraged to cover stories that interest me, including appropriate technology.

Among my strengths as a writer include drafting biographical profiles.

This article highlights a professor who brought an appropriate technology program to my coverage area, is therefore one of my favorite published articles.

As a college student I studied Sustainable Development, so this interview and accompanying story represents the colorful synergy between my education and its practical manifestation.
